How to deal with jaundice that doesn't go away in a 20-day-old baby?

Patient's question:

My nephew was born a week ago. He developed jaundice two days after birth, but it hasn't gone away even after almost a week. We've tried everything, and I'd like to ask: what can be done if a 20-day-old baby's jaundice doesn't go away?

Doctor's answer:

Baby jaundice includes physiological jaundice and pathological jaundice. Physiological jaundice appears 2-3 days after birth and may persist for 5-7 days before subsiding. It usually does not exceed 2 weeks, but in premature infants, jaundice may persist for 3-4 weeks before subsiding. Additionally, with increasing age, the daily increase in serum bilirubin level should not exceed 85 μmol/L or be lower than 0.5 mg/dL per hour.
