Features: As independent economic systems, the Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau regions represent relatively high levels of modernization within China, with significantly advanced economic development. In terms of social prosperity, these regions clearly outperform other parts of China. This is attributed to their effective utilization of favorable international environments and their ability to seize several historical opportunities brought about by international structural adjustments in the 20th century. Over half a century of development, they have adopted industrial strategies that align with their respective regional needs, guiding their economies along feasible and effective paths. In traditional historical education, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau have been relatively underrepresented. The author began teaching an elective course titled "Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau Studies" at East China Normal University in 1993 and completed this book based on the refinement of his lecture notes over the years. The book covers the historical origins of each region, extending to the end of the 20th century, with chapters structured around the different stages of their development. Although it is a comprehensive textbook, it also provides valuable insights for general readers seeking a thorough understanding of the historical, cultural, and social transformations of these three unique regions.
