Patient's question:
Is it a surgery or medication?Doctor's answer:
Primary varicocele with infertility or abnormal semen is a treatment indication regardless of symptom severity. Currently, surgical treatments include high ligation of the internal spermatic vein through the inguinal canal, laparoscopic surgery, high ligation of the internal spermatic vein through the retroperitoneum, and interventional embolization of the spermatic vein. Compared to inguinal surgery and laparoscopic surgery, high ligation of the retroperitoneal spermatic vein has advantages such as minimal surgical trauma, reduced risk of damaging other blood vessels, lower likelihood of failing to ligate the spermatic vein, shorter operation time, lower surgical costs, fewer postoperative complications, and a lower recurrence rate. It is the preferred treatment for unilateral varicocele. For patients undergoing combined surgery and medication, the improvement in semen parameters and pregnancy rates are significantly better than those treated with surgery alone.
