How to Observe Neonatal Jaundice at Home?

Patient's question:

A close friend just had a cute little baby, but the baby has quite severe jaundice. Recently, I heard from her that the baby is still a bit yellow after going to the hospital for a check-up. I wanted to ask, how can you check the baby's jaundice at home?

Doctor's answer:

Neonatal jaundice refers to the period from the umbilical cord clamping to 28 days after birth. Jaundice in the skin, mucous membranes, and sclera is characterized by the accumulation of bilirubin in the body and can be divided into physiological jaundice and pathological jaundice. The jaundice in infants is not controlled by symptoms. If jaundice is visible to the naked eye, a skin jaundice test or a blood bilirubin test should be performed for further clarification. When the jaundice index is greater than 14, timely blue light irradiation is required to prevent further exacerbation of kernicterus.
