Features: Since the reform and opening-up, China's economy has experienced rapid growth, significantly improving its comprehensive national strength and people's living standards. To maintain comprehensive, coordinated, and sustainable economic development and avoid major fluctuations, the central and local governments have consistently emphasized the importance and urgency of economic and industrial restructuring while promoting economic growth. Recently, the Central Economic Work Conference proposed that in 2005, efforts should continue to strengthen and improve macroeconomic regulation and control, vigorously advance restructuring, promote a transformation in the growth model, and ensure stable and rapid economic development. To help government departments, enterprises, and research institutions more accurately grasp the current status, development prospects, and investment opportunities of major national industries during a period of significant economic restructuring, and to align with the central government's direction for industrial restructuring, the China Economic Information Network of the National Information Center organized leaders from government departments and authoritative experts from relevant industries to launch the China Industry Development Report 2004 series. This is the latest research outcome, completed on the basis of summarizing the successful experiences of the previous two reports and fully incorporating expert suggestions and reader feedback. The new report covers 30 important industries at present, conducting in-depth research on the supply-demand status, proportional structure, development trends, and existing problems of these industries. In combination with national industrial policies and their adjustment directions, it objectively evaluates the investment opportunities and commercial prospects of each industry. To meet the broad demands of society, CEIC selected 20 reports from the new series for public publication, allowing more readers to share these valuable research outcomes. I believe that the publication of the China Industry Development Report 2004 series will help government management departments and business leaders better choose investment directions in the new year, prevent redundant construction, promote industrial structure optimization, improve the overall economic efficiency of society, and achieve sustainable and balanced development of the national economy.
