How should psychological impotence be treated?

Patient's question:

Hello doctor!
How should psychological impotence be treated or what should be done? Thank you!

Doctor's answer:

Psychogenic impotence is impotence caused by psychological factors, accounting for more than half of all cases of impotence. When it comes to how to treat psychogenic impotence, it can actually be addressed by eliminating some adverse psychological factors, actively providing psychological treatment, and enhancing sexual education and awareness. Strengthening physical exercise and improving overall physical health levels can lead to the spontaneous recovery of impotence. Psychological treatment, also known as psychotherapy, generally involves mutual communication between doctors and patients to help patients correctly understand their condition and build confidence in overcoming it. During treatment, the following points should be noted:
First, it is essential to alleviate the patient's sexual anxiety, as most impotent patients experience sexual performance anxiety. Due to impotence, they may become overly eager to improve their sexual ability, leading to sexual anxiety. The best way to address sexual anxiety is to explain it to both partners: when sexual issues arise, neither party should blame the other. When sexual difficulties occur, the partner also plays a role. Although there are many causes of impotence, it does not affect treatment. Sexual behavior is a joint effort between both partners, and sexual activity is not limited to intercourse alone. If intercourse is unsatisfactory, strengthening emotional communication can still benefit other aspects of the relationship.
Second, avoid verification or verbal explanations. Clearly communicate to the female partner that male impotence is often accompanied by sexual anxiety. Through mutual emotional communication, male sexual anxiety can be overcome, which helps reduce sexual pressure. During this process, sexual activity should be temporarily avoided until the male's sexual anxiety gradually subsides.
You can teach both partners the technique of sensate focus. During sexual activity, focus attention on physical sensations rather than intercourse. When touching the genitalia or breasts, avoid thinking about external matters, excessive talking, or overconcerning the purpose of sexual behavior. Instead, concentrate entirely on your physical sensations. This method should be practiced repeatedly until the psychogenic impotence is successfully treated.
