"Xing Yun" was compiled by Zhang Shu based on the collection of historical surname works. The book arranges surnames according to the Pingshui rhyme list, grouping surnames under each rhyme, with a total of [5,120 surnames, 509 newly added, and 76 excluded]. After our, the book has been organized into 99 volumes, with approximately 1.4 million words. It is the most comprehensive surname book to date, with the widest scope of. The entire book lists thousands of historically notable figures with surnames, making Zhang Shu's "Xing Yun" the culmination of all previous surname works. The "" by Zhang Ding of the Song Dynasty included 1,189 surnames, the "" by Chen Shi'yu of the Ming Dynasty included 3,724 surnames, the "" by Xiong Junlian of the Qing Dynasty included 468 surnames, and the "" by Chen Shi'yu of the Ming Dynasty included 1,006 surnames. In comparison, "Xing Yun" has the most extensive collection of surnames among similar surname works.
