Publication Date: 2006-07-01
Features: In the history of Chinese academic development, Neo-Confucianism of Song and Ming Dynasties, as a new Confucian thought, gradually became the mainstream of social thought after its formation in the mid-Northern Song Dynasty and exerted a profound influence on various aspects of Chinese society thereafter. Based on the preliminary work Chronological Biographies of Song and Ming Neo-Confucian Scholars, this book has also successively collected over twenty chronological biographies of eighteen renowned Neo-Confucian scholars such as Fan Zhongyan, Ouyang Xiu, Sima Guang, You Zu, Chen Guan, Zhu Xi, Yin Tong, Li Dong, Liu Ziweng, Chen Chuanliang, Jin Lixiang, and Tang Shunzhi. These biographies are of significant research and reference value for studying the personal lives and Neo-Confucian thought of the subjects, as well as for understanding the formation, development, and evolution of Song and Ming Neo-Confucianism. It is worth noting that due to the upcoming publication of Chronological Biographies of Famous Scholars in Early Qing Dynasty by this press, which will collect the chronological biographies of sixty-one famous scholars from the Shunzhi, Kangxi, and Yongzheng reigns, the chronological biographies of early Qing Neo-Confucian scholars such as Sun Qifeng, Chen Que, Huang Zongxi, Lu Shiyi, Zhang Lixiang, Wang Fuzhi, Tang Bin, Li Yong, Lu Longqi, and Gu Yanwu, represented in that work, will not be included in this book. The publication of Chronological Biographies of Song and Ming Neo-Confucian Scholars and its continuation was meticulously guided by Professor Chen Laixuan of the Department of Philosophy, Peking University. Sincere gratitude is extended to him for his guidance.
