How to treat varicocele

Patient's question:

Varicocele will affect the development of the reproductive organs, will it lead to impotence? How should it be treated? Thank you!

Doctor's answer:

1. Varicocele rarely occurs before puberty in males, but after puberty, the incidence gradually increases with age. Additionally, varicocele can affect male fertility. Therefore, preventing the occurrence of this condition is very important. Since the development of varicocele is associated with intense sexual impulses and frequent congestion of the genital organs, controlling overly frequent sexual impulses is a crucial aspect of prevention. Moreover, promptly treating urinary and genital infections and reducing the likelihood of inflammation are also important measures for prevention.
2. Treatment — Mild varicocele without symptoms does not require treatment.
Non-surgical treatment: Mild varicocele or cases accompanied by neurasthenia can be managed by wearing an scrotal support or applying cold compresses.
Surgical treatment: Severe varicocele, cases with a sperm count below 20 million for three consecutive times, or testicular atrophy; or when the varicose veins disappear when lying down, the high ligation of the internal spermatic vein can be performed.
