Journalist's Life for Thirty Years (Witnessing Major Events of the Republic of China)

Author: Tao Juyin

Publishing Date: Not available
Features: Although I did not ask for a raise from the News Daily, the authorities of the News Daily kept increasing my salary. Within half a year, my monthly remuneration for contributions rose to one hundred yuan. Later, when I worked at the News Daily, someone told me that the staff of the newspaper also followed a seniority system, and new employees earned only fifty to sixty yuan per month. As an external staff member who had joined recently, I had "advanced three ranks" within half a year, which could not be considered an "exception" in the news industry. Since I intended to write long-term, I added a general title, "International Situation Under the Microscope," and changed the original title to a subheading, then published it in the News Daily. This marked the beginning of my transition from a news reporter to a columnist. – Tao Juyin
This book is a biography of Tao Juyin, a famous journalist during the Republican era. From 1914, when Tao Juyin joined the Changsha Women's Rights Daily, to 1941, when he launched the Shanghai News Daily, he worked as a journalist for thirty years. Due to the nature of his work, he met many prominent military and political figures of the time and witnessed the political changes in China during these three decades, many of which were little-known political behind-the-scenes stories. Thirty Years of Journalist Life is a self-reflective memoir written by Tao Juyin in his later years, based on his experiences and observations from thirty years of news reporting. It was published by the Zhonghua Book Company in 1948. Written in a factual style and with vivid prose, the book records the political dynamics and the author's experiences in the news industry from 1912 to 1941, offering strong readability and historical value.
With the kind permission of the descendants of Mr. Tao Juyin, we have revised this book, simplified the subheadings of each chapter, added more than thirty historical photographs, and added a subtitle, "Witnessing Major Events in the Republic Era," for the new publication. Most of Mr. Tao Juyin's works were published by the Zhonghua Book Company throughout his life. The reissue of this book is a tribute to Mr. Tao Juyin and also a continuation of the deep bond between him and the Zhonghua Book Company.
