What is a positive antisperm antibody?

Patient's question:

What does it mean if the sperm antibody test is positive?

Doctor's answer:

Antibodies against sperm are a complex pathological product that can affect both men and women, and their exact causes are not yet fully understood. Sperm and seminal fluid from men are considered specific antigens for women. Upon contact with blood, they can trigger immune responses in both men and women, leading to the production of corresponding antibodies that hinder the combination of sperm and eggs, resulting in infertility. In such cases, it is recommended to use condoms to prevent sperm from coming into contact with the woman, thereby avoiding the production of new antibodies against sperm and allowing existing antibodies to gradually disappear. This process is relatively lengthy and typically takes at least six months. Additionally, oral low-dose corticosteroid hormones can be taken to suppress the immune response. Many patients can become pregnant after treatment, so there is no need to worry too much. First, use condoms for contraception for six months, and then have a follow-up examination after another six months.
