A 6-year-old child often has pain in the navel, what's the matter?

Patient's question:

My son is 6 years old. He often has pain in his navel. When pressing around the navel with fingers, there are no hard lumps, no painful points, no diarrhea symptoms, normal bowel movements, and no symptoms of catching a cold. What illness could this be? Thank you!

Doctor's answer:

Intestinal cramps in children are most commonly located around the navel or in the upper abdomen, often occurring suddenly with short-lasting pain, generally not exceeding 30 minutes. They can recur repeatedly, and after the abdominal pain subsides, the child's condition returns to normal. Since this is a physiological phenomenon during childhood development and not a disease, it does not require special treatment.
During episodes of abdominal pain, parents can have the child lie flat with their legs bent and gently massage the area around the navel with their hands (the parent's hands should be warm). Alternatively, applying a warm towel or hot water bag to the navel can help alleviate the discomfort.
