Is it normal for babies to pass gas and poop?

Patient's question:

Doctor, my daughter is two months old. Since she was about 20 days old, her stool has had fat in it. Around 40 days, I had a check-up at a local hospital. The doctor measured her temperature to be about 36.8°C in the morning and about 37.3°C in the afternoon. Her tonsils were slightly red and swollen, and the doctor prescribed some medication. Could it be that a cold caused her diarrhea and excessive gas?

Doctor's answer:

Babies often pass gas along with some stool or yellow liquid when they fart. In fact, these are all normal phenomena. If you observe such behavior, there is no need to worry excessively. Mothers can monitor their baby's diet, check if they are in good spirits, and look for signs of diarrhea. If none of these are abnormal, it indicates that there is no problem. Since babies are young, their ability to control bowel movements is relatively weak, making it easy for them to pass stool when they fart.
