Introduction to Ethnic Issues

Author: Wu Shimin

Publish Date: 1999-07-01
Features: This book is divided into two parts. The first part elaborates on the concepts of ethnicity and ethnic issues, as well as fundamental theoretical questions such as the relationship between ethnicity and the state, and ethnicity and society. It briefly introduces several models for addressing ethnic issues worldwide and the minority issues in the international human rights struggle. The second part discusses China's ethnic issues, focusing on the basic characteristics and conditions of ethnic issues in our country, as well as the principles, policies, regulations, and systems adopted by the Party and the state to address these issues. The content varies in complexity and reflects both traditional and contemporary perspectives. The tree of life remains evergreen, and theory originates from practice. The international turmoil since the 1980s, the impact and evolution of ethnic issues, have provided us with broader space to contemplate these matters. The continuous development and testing of China's theories and practices in addressing ethnic issues have constantly offered us new insights. Thus, we draw on the wisdom of predecessors, observe practices from other regions, and analyze real-world experiences, using our eyes and hearts to examine, organize, and elaborate on the "ethnic issues." The system is not intended to be complete, but rather to offer novelty; the discussions may not be profound, but they aim to be objective and realistic. Our hope is that through this book, we can engage in discussions with ethnic theory researchers, explore with practitioners, and learn with the broad readership concerned about ethnic issues.
