What should I do if a newborn doesn't have a bowel movement?

Patient's question:

My baby just gave birth 6 days ago, and it was the first day she had a bowel movement. On the third day at night, she also had one, but now for three consecutive days she hasn't had a bowel movement. She keeps passing gas, and it smells very bad. What should I do?

Doctor's answer:

Newborns do not have bowel movements. Once abnormal bowel movements appear, it indicates that the baby's digestive system is problematic and needs immediate regulation.
If a newborn does not have a bowel movement, parents can gently massage the baby's small abdomen in a clockwise direction after bathing, using massage oil. This can help promote intestinal movement and facilitate bowel movements.
For babies over two months old, after bathing, they can be given one or two spoons of fresh orange juice, with water added. The ratio of orange juice to water should be 1:3. Orange juice is rich in vitamin C, which can aid in digestion and make bowel movements easier.
If a newborn does not have a bowel movement, as long as their spirits are good and their appetite is normal, treatment is not necessary.
