Prostate hyperplasia cancer surgery postoperative hematuria what is the situation

Patient's question:

Hello doctor, my father underwent radioactive seed implantation therapy for prostate cancer 4 years ago and has had a good recovery. However, he has experienced two episodes of hematuria this year. The first time, he took Yunnan Baiyao and the bleeding stopped, followed by a CT scan, where the doctor said it was a postoperative complication and nothing was wrong. Yesterday, he had another episode of hematuria.

Doctor's answer:

1. Hematuria in the elderly should first be ruled out for urinary tract tumors. If enhanced CT does not show any abnormalities, cystoscopy is recommended.
2. Prostate-related bleeding often manifests as hematuria at the beginning and/or end of urination.
3. Prostate hyperplasia is also present in about 35% of patients with hematuria. It is recommended to check urinary tract ultrasound + prostate volume + residual urine, free urinary flow rate, and recheck PSA to determine further treatment.
4. The frequency of bleeding cannot be predicted.
5. If there are no hematological abnormalities or if anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs are not being used, bleeding often stops on its own.
