Features: These once magnificent pyramids are located in the Sipan region of the Lambayeque Valley in Peru. They have now suffered severe erosion, and the small mound in front contains many burial chambers, including the tomb of the "Warrior Priest." The remaining pyramids, which are somewhat less impressive, await further excavation, and the number of treasures they hold remains unknown. The surrounding Lake Guatavita is encircled by lush Andean mountains. To its left, one can still see the drainage ditches dug by Antonio de Sepúlveda in the 1980s in search of treasure. Lake Guatavita is one of the five sacred lakes of the Muisca people. Legend has it that each sacred lake is the dwelling place of a deity, who demands that the people offer gems and gold to them.
