Features: After traveling from Western Europe to Central Asia over a distance of more than 25,000 li in over two and a half years, the Franciscan friar John of Montecorvino arrived at the camp of Batu Khan on the Volga River in Western Mongolia on April 4, 1246. He then reached Kara-Khoto on August 24 and had the honor of attending the enthronement ceremony of Emperor Güyük. On November 13 of the same year, he left Kara-Khoto to return home and passed through the camp of Batu Khan again on May 9, 1247. He finally returned to Lyon on November 24, 1247. Later, he was also sent as a papal envoy to France. John of Montecorvino died in Dalmatia, now within the borders of modern-day Slovenia, in 1252.
