Beijing is a historic and culturally rich city with over 3,000 years of urban history. Five dynasties—Liao, Jin, Yuan, Ming, and Qing—successively established their capitals here, leaving behind countless precious cultural relics and historical sites that represent Chinese civilization. Since the founding of the People's Republic of China, Beijing has served as the capital, becoming the political, cultural, and international exchange center of the nation. In the more than half a century since then, Beijing has undergone tremendous changes and has developed into a world-renowned metropolis. During this period, we have accumulated a wealth of valuable experience and also learned many lessons. We believe these will become a precious legacy as we continue to move forward. After nearly two years of effort, the "Historical and Cultural City Beijing" series, organized and compiled by the Beijing Municipal Planning Commission, the Beijing Urban Planning and Design Research Institute, and the Beijing Dongyi Cultural Exchange Center, is about to be published by Beijing Publishing House. This series follows the historical and cultural protected areas within the old city of Beijing, accompanied by concise and vivid text and images, offering a perspective on the history and present of Beijing's urban construction from the viewpoint of urban planning. It explores the integration of traditional culture and modern life. This is a meaningful endeavor. I am delighted with this achievement! With the 2008 Olympic Games approaching, I believe this series will increasingly attract the attention of readers both at home and abroad, becoming an excellent book for them to gain a deeper understanding of Beijing and experience its unique charm.
