David E. A. Wood, Dean, John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University
The authors have devoted great effort to liberating their own minds. They do not aspire to offer final solutions for China's development, but they hope to maximize the knowledge and insights gained at Harvard and share them with Chinese readers, helping more Chinese people achieve the goal of ideological liberation proposed by Comrade Deng Xiaoping.
Ezra F. Vogel, Professor and Former Director, Fairbank Center for East Asian Research, Harvard University
No dream of harmony would have given rise to Tsinghua University, the early railways of China, or the constitution of the early Republic of China; without the dreams of Kang Youwei, Liang Qichao, Sun Yat-sen, and Mao Zedong and Deng Xiaoping, there would be no gestation and birth of the People's Republic of China, nor the modernization movement; without the dreams of Li Dazhao, Chen Duxiu, Hu Shih, and Lu Xun, there would be no new Chinese literature; without the dreams of Qian Xuesen, Qian Weichang, and Qian Sanqiang, there would be no strong science in China today. The new generation of modern China must dream of its modernization.
Ye Guohua, Former Special Advisor to the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Chairman of the Hong Kong Policy Research Institute
The authors of this book come from diverse backgrounds and ages, and the issues they address are vastly different, but their purpose is the same: at this noble academic of Harvard, they use different "telescopes" to seek the future of China; with the knowledge and methods they have learned, they analyze the various challenges facing China's social development. We can appreciate the power of their rational analysis and feel their profound sense of historical responsibility.
Xue Lan, Executive Vice Dean, School of Public Policy and Management, Tsinghua University
Driven by deepening economic reforms and globalization, China has long reached the point of no return and can no longer "feel its way along the rocks" as it did in the past 25 years. Raising the development stage to a "second 25-year reform" and adopting a "future-oriented" mindset to look at China's future development can guide China toward a direction better equipped to face new challenges.
Chinese young scholars at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University have attempted to use "telescopes" from different angles to seek the future of China. Through this book, we share our Chinese dreams and hope to inspire young scholars in mainland China to seek the future and development direction of China together, and to participate in and witness the process of the "second 25-year reform."
This book contains both idealistic or thought-provoking suggestions and practical policy comments and recommendations. We remain committed to pursuing dreams while acknowledging the limitations of reality; we seek modernization and internationalization while upholding China's core values; we maintain a national perspective while not forgetting the sentiments of regions (and SARs); in diplomacy, we must be both opportunistic and strategic. This dual perspective is both a challenge for public management talent in the "second 25-year reform" and the key to fulfilling China's historical mission!
