How to check for varicocele

Patient's question:

Male, 21 years old, discovered in May 2010 that the left scrotum was significantly larger than the right scrotum. With the hand, it was possible to feel a distinct "worm-like" object inside the left scrotum, but the object inside the scrotum was much thicker than the "worm."

Doctor's answer:

Clinically, varicocele can be classified into three degrees:
1 degree (mild): When standing, dilated veins are not visible on the scrotal skin, but dilated veins can be felt inside the scrotum. When lying down, the dilated veins disappear quickly.
2 degree (moderate): When standing, dilated veins are visible on the scrotum. Dilated veins can be felt inside the scrotum, and the swelling gradually disappears when lying down.
3 degree (severe): The scrotal surface has obvious thick, dilated veins. Inside the scrotum, there are prominent, worm-like dilated veins with thickened and hardened vein walls. The swelling disappears slowly when lying down.
For secondary varicocele, it is important to examine the abdomen and perform intravenous pyelography to rule out kidney tumors.
