The book consists of fourteen volumes, recording over 700 poems. Due to its rich content, appropriate length, and concise annotations, it has become a widely used textbook for ancient Chinese poetry in modern times. Shen Deqian (1673–1769), styled Queshi and known by the sobriquet Guiyu, was a native of Changzhou in Jiangnan (now Suzhou, Jiangsu Province). He was a poet of the early Qing Dynasty and held the position of Vice Minister of the Ministry of Rites in the Cabinet during the reign of Emperor Qianlong. In addition to this book, he also compiled The Selected Collection of Tang Poetry, The Selected Collection of Ming Poetry, and The Selected Collection of Qing Poetry, among others.
