In fact, as translators, we have benefited from the translation process; through this book, we were exposed to many constitutional materials that had never appeared in Chinese before, deepening our understanding of the American constitutional process. Although these gains may not be the "original intention" of every translator undertaking this work, they are certainly enough to make us believe that the effort put into it is worthwhile, let alone that once it reaches the readers, those who benefit from it will far exceed the translators. The book explores many interesting social issues and their constitutional solutions in the context of American constitutionalism. Some of these issues are common to the world, while others may be unique to the United States. Regardless, let us borrow a passage from the preface of French thinker Alexis de Tocqueville's book "Democracy in America" to serve as the beginning of this book: "Let us turn our attention to America, not to blindly copy the institutions it has designed for itself, but to better understand what suits us. Let us seek guidance there, not models; let us adopt its principles, not its legal details."
