For manuscripts and previously published speeches or records of conversations, the editorial work mainly involved verifying historical facts and correcting text and punctuation. For unpublished speeches or records of conversations, significant effort was required for technical textual editing. Volume 1 and 2 were published in 1993 on the centennial of Mao Zedong's birth, Volume 3, 4, and 5 were published in 1996 on the 20th anniversary of Mao Zedong's death, and Volume 6, 7, and 8 were published on July 1, 1999. Volumes 1 to 5 cover the writings from the democratic revolution period, while Volumes 6 to 8 cover the writings from the socialist period. The total selection includes 803 documents, with 504 from the democratic revolution period and 299 from the socialist period.
