Author: (French) André Gide, translated by Li Yumin
Publisher:
Publication Date: 2002-01-01
Features: His entire life was a long series of processes of engagement and disengagement. His only consistent tenet was the refusal to accept any dogma. From this point onward until the end of his long life, he always advocated the wisdom he had inherited from Goethe. Except for his regrettable brief involvement in politics, he wanted to be an artist, which meant providing a perfect form for thought and making it his sole profession. The role of the author is to build a dwelling; and the one who occupies it is the reader. Gide was such a person. — Moroia
Gide always lived among the generation he sought to conquer. Youth is infectious, and his youthful master preserved some of its freshness. The youth sought Gide and often found themselves in him. — Moroia
As long as Gide lived, France had a literary life, a life of intellectual exchange, and a life of always honest debate. His death ended the era that could inspire the mind. — Mauriac

As the 50th anniversary of the death of the 20th-century French heavyweight writer André Gide is approaching, both the Huacheng Publishing House and the People's Literature Publishing House planned to publish a collection of Gide's works. After consultation, it was decided to adopt a flexible and collaborative approach to jointly launch The Collected Works of André Gide.
The Collected Works of André Gide is divided into five volumes: Essays, Biographies, Diaries, Travelogues, and Literary Criticism. Each volume is self-contained but can be combined or used separately. Among these five volumes, five-thirds of the chapters are being translated and introduced to Chinese readers for the first time.
The Food of the Gods, selected from the five volumes, is regarded as the "illness of the new century" and the "bible of the restless generation." The controversy caused by Return from the Soviet Union has long exceeded the significance of the event itself. If Seeds Do Not Die, in which the author recounts his life until his marriage at the age of 26, records his slow and arduous journey toward freedom. In the literary criticism, Dostoevsky is both an essay and a discussion of the person, while The Imaginary Interview is wide-ranging and innovative, offering many profound insights. His diaries, written from 1887 when he was 14 until 1950, the year of his death, contain the genes of all his works and are extremely valuable and special materials for studying his works and legendary life. They can be considered his least embellished "autobiography."
