How long does neonatal jaundice take to subside?

Patient's question:

My sister just gave birth to a child in the hospital a while ago, but now the child has jaundice. So the whole family is very worried. Could you please tell me how long it takes for jaundice in newborns to go away?

Doctor's answer:

Physiological Jaundice in Newborns: Newborn jaundice typically begins 2-3 days after birth, becomes most noticeable 4-5 days later, and naturally disappears within 7-14 days. In general, the condition is good with no adverse reactions, referred to as "physiological jaundice." Due to less mature liver function in premature infants, jaundice may appear on the third or fourth day and last longer. Premature infants' jaundice may persist for 14 days or longer.
Breast Milk Jaundice in Newborns: Jaundice usually starts 4-7 days after birth and lasts for about 2 months, primarily characterized by elevated unconjugated bilirubin with no clinical symptoms.
