Patient's question:
Previously, the child kept crying and then went to the hospital for a check-up. The doctor said the child had developed cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection in newborns. I would like to ask what would happen if the CMV infection in newborns is left untreated?Doctor's answer:
Severe cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection may involve extensive visceral damage, such as the circulatory, nervous, immune, hematologic, hepatic, and renal systems, and further related tests are recommended. Once infected, CMV will persist in the body for a long time or even permanently. Medications cannot completely eliminate the virus but can only inhibit viral replication. CMV can be transmitted through the placenta or birth canal, but if there is no pneumonia, encephalitis, or hepatitis, antiviral drugs can be temporarily used. CMV infection can be classified as either symptomatic or chronic infection and systemic infection, with clinical manifestations varying from person to person.
