Patient's question:
My baby is only two weeks old, and recently I've noticed that the baby often twitches during sleep at night. I'm really scared. Could you please ask the doctor what the difference is between twitching and trembling in newborns?Doctor's answer:
The symptoms of infant tremors typically appear within the first month after birth, with the affected areas being variable, most commonly the upper arms, lower limbs, and lower jaw. They generally do not occur around the mouth corners or eyelids. The tremors are more pronounced during crying, with high frequency and small amplitude. Usually, the baby's eyes show no abnormalities. In contrast, the symptoms of infant convulsions typically involve limb twitching accompanied by staring. The amplitude of the limb twitching is relatively larger than tremors, with lower frequency and regularity. Holding the affected area does not stop the twitching.
