Value and Teaching

Features: The value and teaching methods used in this book are based on a theory we call value clarification. This theory holds that: many people today find it difficult to "bounce back"; decisions seem overly complex, pressures appear diverse, and changes seem highly unsettling. As a result, some struggle in confusion, indifference, or contradiction, failing to grasp their own values and unable to independently discover meaningful and satisfying ways of life. Value clarification theory enables us to help these individuals clarify their values. The theory asserts that if we can effectively assist them, the results will be evident in their behavioral changes. Through effort, people will exhibit less confusion, indifference, or contradiction. What kind of help will this book provide? Generally speaking, value clarification theory requires us to encourage people to spend more time and energy thinking about value-related issues. We should encourage them to reflect more carefully and comprehensively on their own values and the value issues of the entire society.
