Features: This book was published in 1864 (the third year of the Tongzhi reign, the fourteenth year of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom). That year saw the birth of several great figures who would later influence academic and intellectual circles, such as Max Weber from Germany, L. T. Hobhouse from the United Kingdom, José Ortega y Gasset from Spain, and William James, one of the representatives of American pragmatism. These figures all indicate that, at that time, European academic thought was surging forward toward modernization and aligning with modern "academic norms." Yet this book seems out of place in studying the "patrilineal" system of ancient Greece and Rome. It is divided into five volumes: the first three discuss ancient city-state governance in the order of "faith"—"family"—"city-state," demonstrating that ancient city-state governance was based on religious belief and family systems. The fourth volume explores ancient "peasant revolutions," while the fifth volume examines the decline of ancient city-state systems.
