Features: The Journey to the West is an outstanding romantic fantasy novel in the history of Chinese literature. It tells the story of how Sun Wukong and others protect Tang Sanzang on his journey to the West to retrieve sacred scriptures, defeating demons and overcoming obstacles along the way. The novel uses vivid brushwork to create distinct and beloved mythological heroes like Sun Wukong and Zhu Bajie, depicting many romantic and enchanting, highly infectious magical tales. At the same time, it subtly reflects the social and historical conditions of the time, as well as progressive political ideals. The Journey to the West is imaginative, with a fascinating and interesting plot, a grand yet rigorous structure, and humorous and witty language. It is a masterpiece of ancient Chinese fantasy novels. The story of Tang Sanzang's pilgrimage had already been widely circulated before the novel was completed. During the Song and Yuan dynasties, more developed works such as The Poetic Tale of Tang Sanzang's Journey to the West and The Story of Tang Sanzang's Journey to the West had already emerged. On this foundation, The Journey to the West was formally compiled in the 1570s, and after its completion, it became even more widely disseminated and had numerous versions. Since the 18th century, it has been translated into multiple languages and spread overseas. The English translation of this book was completed by Professor John C. H. Jannard, a British sinologist, and it is the closest English translation to the original work.
