Publishing Date: 2006-05-01
Features: The Painted Collection of Song Lyrics was originally titled Poetry After Poems. Published in the 40th year of the Wanli era (1612), it selects 100 of the finest Song lyrics from the Poetry After Poems compiled by an anonymous Southern Song dynasty editor, with each poem accompanied by an illustration. The compiler was a Ming dynasty scholar named Wang. The selection features works by Qin Guan, Su Shi, Huang Tingjian, and Liu Yong most prominently, providing a basic reflection of the essence of Song lyrics before the Southern Song dynasty. The woodblock prints were crafted by renowned masters of the Huizhou school, each exquisitely rendered. One poem, one illustration—complementing each other in harmony. As Wu Ruyuan's preface states: "When displayed on the desk, one indulges in the scenery, gradually immersing oneself in emotions until it becomes unbearable." The illustrations in this edition are reproduced from a Ming dynasty woodblock print, with minor adjustments made to maintain the original layout. The annotations and explanations by the editor are insightful and precise, with detailed references to the classical allusions mentioned in the lyrics, greatly benefiting readers in understanding the book.
