What should I do if my baby has diarrhea?

Patient's question:

Patient Age: My baby is 15 and a half months old, and has had intermittent diarrhea for 10 days. The first four days, the diarrhea occurred once or twice a day. On the fifth day, it improved and there was no diarrhea. On the sixth day, after eating shrimp in the afternoon, it had diarrhea again. On the seventh day, I went to the hospital for a stool examination and found 10 white blood cells. What should I do?

Doctor's answer:

Bacterial dysentery in children is a common intestinal infectious disease in children, caused by the Shigella genus, and is characterized by clinical features such as fever, abdominal pain, diarrhea, tenesmus, and mucopurulent bloody stools. Bacterial dysentery in children not only causes digestive system damage but, if left untreated, can lead to failure of systemic functions such as circulation and respiration, and even be life-threatening. Good personal hygiene is essential: drink boiled water, not raw water; wash fruits, vegetables, bowls, chopsticks, and gargle with disinfected water; wash hands before meals and after defecation; do not defecate in public places; reheat leftover food before eating; keep raw and cooked food separate to prevent flies from crawling on food.
