Features: History and Inspiration—The selected essays from Lessing's theological writings reflect the basic structure of his theological works. When reading these essays, it is particularly important to carefully grasp Lessing's perspective on the relationship between theology and philosophy. In today's pluralistic religious and intellectual landscape, academia increasingly values Lessing's theological insights into the civil society (modern democratic society). Lessing is no later than Rousseau in his time, and he offers a deeper understanding of the Enlightenment problem entangling 20th-century political philosophy and theism than Rousseau. Lessing's theological writings are not only highly instructive for the study of the history of theological thought but also exquisite literary works that transcend the Enlightenment era. Lessing was not only a playwright, poet, and critic but also a philosopher, theologian, and classical scholar. As Strauss remarked, Lessing "uniquely combined the distinct qualities of a philosopher and a scholar." For intellectuals in the postmodern cultural context, Lessing is undoubtedly a predecessor worthy of special attention. This "Lessing Commentary Series" aims to expand the scope of Chinese translations of Lessing's works. Although we can only begin with the essentials for now, we have focused on compiling and annotating key works of Lessing that have not yet been translated into Chinese.
