Why is there itching in the male scrotum?

Patient's question:

The gun oil corroded the genitalia. Now the penis is swollen, and the scrotum is itchy. It has been like this for 3 days. What medicine should the doctor use?

Doctor's answer:

(1) Poor hygiene habits. This condition is more common among manual laborers, especially in summer, when the temperature in the groin area is high, with excessive sweating, dampness, and poor ventilation. The scrotal skin is affected by sweat immersion and friction from underwear, leading to male scrotal itching. Wearing tight jeans or nylon underwear that does not absorb or breathe can also cause this scrotal itching.
(2) Scrotal inflammation. Riboflavin deficiency can lead to scrotal inflammation. The scrotum may show changes such as redness, dryness, scaling, papules, and crusts, accompanied by male scrotal itching. At the same time, symptoms like angular cheilitis, glossitis, and oral ulcers may also appear.
(3) Scrotal eczema. Scrotal eczema is a common skin condition in men. In the acute phase, the affected skin becomes red and develops small bumps, with occasional erosion, exudation, and fissures, easily triggering male scrotal itching.
(4) Fungal infections. Scrotal inflammation caused by fungi, such as candidal balanitis, or fungal infections like tinea cruris affecting the scrotum, can all lead to male scrotal itching.
(5) Dermatitis and allergies. Neurodermatitis or eczema in the groin area can also cause male scrotal itching. Given these possible causes, it is recommended to first seek a diagnosis from a formal hospital before proceeding with targeted treatment.
