What is retrograde ejaculation?

Patient's question:

Male, 33 years old, discovered abnormality during coitus with wife. What is retrograde ejaculation?

Doctor's answer:

The prostate is actually composed of muscle fibers and glandular tissue. At least three groups of functionally different muscle groups exist both inside and around the glands, under the control of various nerves, working in coordination to act as "valves" for these ducts. During urination, the detrusor muscle opens, and semen is expelled outside the body. If the adjustment loses control, the internal sphincter fails to lock the bladder opening, while the external sphincter contracts and locks the distal opening, causing the semen to flow backward into the bladder. This phenomenon is known as "retrograde ejaculation."
