Patient's question:
White C+: Red C+: Occasionally noted. Additional note: The child has been experiencing diarrhea since they were three and a half months old, with green, frothy stools containing curds, occurring multiple times a day. An anxious mother seeks help. First follow-up question: The child has been in good spirits and has a decent appetite. Second follow-up question: Probiotics, smectite, and cefaclor have been tried.Doctor's answer:
It is estimated that the first bowel movement of a child when they enter the world would have frightened their parents, as it was a large amount of dark green substance, scaring the fathers into running to call the doctor. Newborn babies, even if they haven't eaten anything, will pass dark green meconium within 6 to 12 hours after birth. It is unknown whether the babies are being considerate of their mothers or if they are unwilling to dirty the amniotic fluid they swallow every day, but they must come out of their mother's belly before they are willing to pass their first bowel movement in life. The meconium that has accumulated for 9 months must be cleared out through frequent bowel movements, generally lasting for 2 to 3 days, with 3 to 5 bowel movements per day, until the thick dark green substance disappears.
