Features: The 7th National Conference on Ancient Chinese Language and the International Conference on Language Research of Bamboo and Silk Documents were held from September 21 to 25, 2004, at Wuhan University. The conference was co-organized by the Institute of Historical and Linguistic Studies, Department I of the Language Research Institute, the Chinese Social Sciences Academy; the editorial office of the journal Chinese Language; and the School of Liberal Arts, Wuhan University. The School of Liberal Arts, Wuhan University, served as the host, while Hubei University and Hubei Normal University acted as co-sponsors. Over 100 scholars from France, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, mainland China, Hong Kong, and other regions attended the conference, along with more than 30 additional distinguished guests. A total of 107 papers were submitted, with 87 presented during the sessions. The conference featured both plenary reports and parallel sessions. The plenary reports were delivered by Guo Xiliang of Peking University, Zong Fubang of Wuhan University, Xu Dan of the Institute of Far Eastern Languages and Cultures, Paris, Qian Zongwu of Yangzhou University, Shi Xin of Hubei Normal University, Sun Liangming of Shandong Normal University, Yang He-ming of Wuhan University, Liu Song-chuan of Hubei University, Lu Xi-xing of Nanchang University, and Zhang Jia-wen of Zhuhai College, Jinan University. The papers presented at the conference primarily focused on the study of ancient Chinese grammar, with supplementary discussions on characters, phonology, etymology, and vocabulary. The conference showcased significant achievements in the field of bamboo and silk document language research, with a considerable proportion of papers dedicated to this area, reflecting the growing importance and promising progress of such studies. This book is the second series of research compilations by the Society for Bamboo and Silk Document Studies in China. It includes 44 research papers on bamboo and silk document studies, holding considerable academic value.
