Publish Date: 2005-11-01
Features: Nationalism and Islam, as representatives of modern and traditional ideologies in the Middle East, have a complex relationship that has significantly impacted the political development process in the region. However, for such a major issue involving the historical trajectory of the Middle East—namely, the relationship between Middle Eastern nationalism and Islam—research both domestically and internationally remains quite weak. To date, no monographs have been published, and scholarly papers are scarce. In light of this, this book conducts an in-depth study of the interactive relationship between Middle Eastern nationalism and Islam. The book explores the attitudes of Middle Eastern nationalism toward Islam, reveals the commonalities and individual characteristics of the relationship between different forms of nationalism and Islam, and analyzes the impact of Middle Eastern nationalism on Islam. Regarding the responses of Islam to the challenges posed by nationalism, the book focuses on the intellectual impact of Islamic fundamentalism on nationalism. Additionally, it analyzes the influence of the relationship between Middle Eastern nationalism and Islam on the political modernization of the region from perspectives such as the construction of the nation-state, political legitimacy, political institutions and policy systems, and political democratization. The book concludes that in the long term, the complex contradictions between Middle Eastern nationalism and Islam will continue to intertwine in the political development process of the Middle East. Alleviating and eliminating the tensions between Middle Eastern nationalism and Islam will remain a long-term challenge for the political modernization of Muslim countries in the Middle East.
