What are the reasons for high lymphocyte count

Patient's question:

My son just turned 6 months old. Today, I took him to the hospital for a check-up. We had a complete blood count done, and the platelet count was 327. The neutrophil percentage was 16.2%, slightly high or low. The lymphocyte count was 8.20, and the lymphocyte percentage was 82.6%, which is much higher than the normal range for infants. Is it a concern?

Doctor's answer:

Children's lymphocyte levels are naturally high. If there are fever symptoms, it may be a viral infection. If there are no symptoms, it can be considered normal. It won't be much higher than other infants, because most others are 70% or above. A simple high lymphocyte ratio is most commonly due to a viral infection, but we need to consider other test results as a whole, such as the percentage of neutrophils in white blood cells, platelets, red blood cells, etc. Additionally, we should look at the patient's symptoms. It's best to go to the hospital and have a doctor make a comprehensive judgment.
