One horse travels for a long time,
The journey grows harder as it goes.
Unaware of the frontier’s hardships,
Only marvels at the traveler’s thin clothes.
The stream is cold, the spring’s sound is bitter,
The mountain is empty, the leaves are dry.
Don’t say the frontier is extreme,
The clouds and snow still stretch endlessly.
In the second town, green mountains at the mouth,
Cold wind blows as the sun sets.
Mountains and rocks where birds don’t pass,
Ice and snow make the horse linger.
Returning to the frontier means no strategy,
Going home relies on a set time.
On the eastern mountain, there are enough pine and cypress,
Returning to build a thatched cottage.
In the third town, driving the cavalry,
Hesitating, ashamed of the fine sword.
To travel far like this, is the small salary truly wasted?
On the steep cliffs, water flows downward,
The peaks rise high with clouds together.
I can already see white hair,
What’s the use of wearing a green robe?
