Features: Oil painter Shen Ling currently resides in Beijing. Her works are heavily influenced by German Expressionism, with many being portraits of couples that convey rich emotions. Her bold brushstrokes and vibrant colors are notable aspects of her art. In her work "The Painter and the Model," she focuses on the private space of artistic creation, boldly using unconventional colors to depict the unique facial features and tension in the figures. In another piece titled "Flew Away," Shen Ling openly and frankly portrays the pleasure of sexuality. Although China's sexual culture tradition has remained unbroken since ancient times, the influence of Puritanical thought, which once held significant sway, still lingers today. Thus, a contemporary Chinese woman expressing sexual pleasure so vividly remains quite shocking. Despite this awareness, we are heartened to see that when "Flew Away" was exhibited at an art gallery in Shanghai in 2000, the audience's attitude was very tolerant.
