Features: This series aims to encourage creative thematic research in the fields of the history of science, the history of technology, the history of medicine, and related disciplines. It accepts qualified manuscripts from both China and abroad, representing a forward-looking academic publishing initiative. The series is fully managed by two legal entities, without establishing an editorial committee or organizing celebrity networking events. It follows a policy of publishing one book at a time once it reaches maturity, hoping to explore collaboration between academia and the publishing industry in building a new culture for the 21st century. "The New Century Series in the History of Science" is a collaborative project jointly planned by the Institute of the History of Natural Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Liaoning Education Publishing House, aiming to collect outstanding research achievements in the field of the history of science and promote academic development. "The Europeanization of Ming-Qing Astronomical Instruments" is one of the projects under this series. In the 17th and 18th centuries, European missionaries such as Johann Adam Schall von Bell, Ferdinand Verbiest, and Southwell arrived at the Imperial Astronomical Observatory of the Ming and Qing dynasties, introducing European astronomy and instrument technology to the Chinese. The missionaries and their Chinese collaborators combined the Danish design of Tycho Brahe with traditional Chinese manufacturing techniques, designing and producing several types of instruments for the Beijing Observatory, leading to the Europeanization of Chinese royal astronomical instruments. These instruments hold significant positions in the history of Chinese instruments and the history of Sino-Western scientific and technological exchange. This book is the doctoral dissertation of Researcher Zhang Baichun. The author describes the process of European astronomical instrument knowledge entering China in the 17th and 18th centuries, analyzes the instruments introduced and designed by the missionaries and their related manufacturing techniques, evaluates their historical significance, and examines the factors influencing the eastward spread of European instrument technology.
