Features: The writing of overseas Chinese women enables people to explore and transcend the complexity of human existence and meaning from a unique perspective. This book begins with a specific analysis of writing and focuses on researching some representative characteristics of overseas Chinese women's writing, such as heterogeneity, homeland consciousness, local awareness, and hybridity. It emphasizes outlining the developmental trajectory of Chinese women's writing centered in the United States, analyzing texts in detail, and organizing the underlying theories based on this foundation. The book is divided into four chapters.
Chapter 1 reviews the historical evolution and current state of overseas Chinese literature, primarily focusing on the definition of overseas Chinese literature, the development and characteristics of Chinese women's writing, and its theoretical significance. It covers the overall development of overseas Chinese literature and regional literature, with a particular emphasis on American Chinese literature. Given the significant influence of American Chinese women's writing, this chapter aims to provide a comprehensive introduction to the development of overseas Chinese literature centered in the United States. It further analyzes the transition of Chinese women's writing from rebellious narratives to gendered writing, revealing this unique literary phenomenon.
Chapter 2 presents a historical review of overseas Chinese women's writing, discussing the influence of heterogeneous cultural contexts on female writing and their active engagement within this unique context. It focuses on dual identities, marginal writing, ethnic representation, self-representation, and gender consciousness. It examines the works of early Chinese women writers, such as Edith, Huang Yuxue, and Zhang Canfang, who, though rarely discussed domestically, laid the foundation for the tradition of Chinese-American women's writing. After explaining the relationship between traditional evolution, the chapter analyzes the gender consciousness in the works of Maxine Hong Kingston, preparing the ground for the innovation of contemporary Chinese women's writing. The interplay of heterogeneous cultures, dual identities, bilingualism, cultural identity, and gender consciousness are central to this chapter.
Chapter 3 builds on the discussion in Chapter 2, analyzing four representative female writers of Chinese and English writing—Wen Lanling, Yan Geling, Amy Tan, and Maxine Hong Kingston—as case studies. Supported by relevant theories, it conducts detailed, multi-angle textual analysis and interpretation of their major works, such as Sang Qing and Tao Hong, Fellow Travelers, The Joy Luck Club, and The Woman Warrior, highlighting their writing characteristics and textual strategies. Through these examples, the uniqueness and significance of this writing tradition are illustrated.
Chapter 4 synthesizes the arguments and textual analyses from the previous three chapters to and explore the theoretical significance and problematic aspects of overseas Chinese women's writing. It focuses on analyzing the relationships between gender and female writing, the discourse of the other, and cultural narration within overseas Chinese women's texts, as well as their theoretical implications. Finally, from the perspective of a world of difference, it discusses how the writing of overseas Chinese women expands the field of comparative literature. Due to the continuous exploration of overseas Chinese women writers in their creative work, this book includes recent interviews with Maxine Hong Kingston and Amy Tan as appendices. Readers can gain insights into their new works and creative thoughts. Additionally, interviews with Wen Lanling and Yan Geling are included as appendices, allowing the writers to interpret their works from their own perspectives.
Most of the English materials discussed in this book are being introduced to China for the first time to ensure their value. Throughout the book, it does not attempt to draw definitive conclusions but advocates for an open-ended structure in its presentation, facilitating further in-depth research. The book discusses several important concepts, categories, terms, and research scopes, which are explained here as necessary.
