Can individuals with balanitis have sexual activity?

Patient's question:

I'm a weekend husband with my wife, and we have sex every weekend. But I've noticed some discomfort in my legs recently, with my penis being itchy and painful. When I took a bath at night, I noticed that the head of my penis was red. I couldn't find any reason for it online, so I went to the hospital for a check-up. They said I have balanitis. It's the weekend now, and I don't know if I can have sex.

Doctor's answer:

Generally, balanoposthitis is divided into balanitis and posthitis. This inflammation can be infectious or non-infectious, and in clinical diagnosis, infectious balanoposthitis is more common. The infectious type is often caused by unclean sexual intercourse, transmitting Candida albicans, trichomonas, chlamydia, mycoplasma, diplococcus, or other bacteria. Non-infectious factors are mostly due to excessive foreskin, insufficient hygiene, and unclean substances between the foreskin and glans, which can stimulate the local foreskin and mucosa to cause recurrent inflammation. In this case, it is best to avoid sexual activity, as there is a possibility of reinfection.
