The moonlight over the South Sea has now turned into a deep indigo, blending with the dark green waves, like poetry that captivates the soul. On the vast sea, only the young Liang Qichao and his grandfather, along with their small boat, are present. The oars stir the water, producing a rustling sound, accompanied by the snoring of the waves and the murmuring of the sea breeze. Though no one speaks, their spirits are in perfect harmony, and the boat steers resolutely toward the extraordinary, sword-like, straight rock that pierces the sky in the deep sea.
This is a long historical novel depicting the life of Liang Qichao, a modern Chinese scholar and outstanding thinker. It is a vivid portrayal of the tumultuous era of China's transition from feudal autocracy to a democratic republic over a century ago. In the dark and autocratic Qing Dynasty, Liang Qichao and his peers were among the first to propose the ideas of the Self-Strengthening Movement and the governance of the nation, sparking a great social reform movement that brought about a liberation of thought in China.
Written with a grand and lyrical style, the book weaves poetry-like rhythms and the elegance of prose to depict the spiritual demeanor and inner worlds of various figures from all walks of life in Chinese society during the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty and the early days of the Xinhai Revolution. The book is vast in scope and majestic in tone. Though the story meanders through the struggles for power in the imperial court and the fates of characters decided in the blink of an eye, the narrative remains clear, well-structured, and the characters are vividly portrayed, as if they could leap off the page.
Though the story spans a century, it offers valuable historical lessons that are thought-provoking. Reading it is both enjoyable and inspiring, serving as a testament to the saying, "History is literature, and literature is history."
