Features: This book is part of the "Guangzhou Lecture Series," featuring articles that are lectures by renowned scholars and influential figures delivered at the Guangzhou Lecture Forum. The articles are both profound and accessible, blending deep academic insights with inspiring life wisdom. In the past, Kang Youwei established the "Wanmu Cao Tang" in Guangzhou, recruiting young students for systematic teaching, interpreting traditional classics with new ideas. He pioneered the movement, nurturing talent. His contributions to modern education were remarkable. Today, our Guangzhou Lecture Forum is open to the general public, spreading advanced culture and creating a vibrant atmosphere of intellectual debate and brilliance. Guangzhou is renowned as the center of Lingnan culture, the birthplace of the Maritime Silk Road, the cradle of modern revolution, and the forefront of reform and opening up, with a rich historical and cultural heritage. To foster a cultural metropolis, the Guangzhou Lecture Forum was established in March 2002, aiming to preserve academic knowledge, broaden cultural horizons, enhance the quality of the general public, and rejuvenate this historic city, shaping its cultural landscape. How can the cultural sophistication of a city be measured? To some extent, the forum offers a window into this aspect. The forum serves as a vehicle for preserving academic knowledge and disseminating new insights, embodying the essence and spirit of urban culture. The Guangzhou Lecture Forum covers a wide range of topics in the humanities and social sciences, including politics, history, economics, culture, law, and society, making it a treasure trove of high-quality content and a "intellectual feast" for Guangzhou. Here, we can explore the splendor of both Eastern and Western cultures while discussing solutions to contemporary issues. Listeners sit before the forum, yet their minds are connected to the world. The forum provides a direct opportunity for speakers and audiences to interact. Just as advanced film and television arts cannot replace the stage, theater, or opera today, the lectures by experts offer a broad stage for lifelong education, subtly elevating people's cultural literacy. After several years of operation, audiences believe that the forum broadens horizons and inspires thinking, making such lectures a vital part of spiritual life. The voice of the forum may stay within its halls, but its wisdom transcends time and space. Now, to meet the needs of readers, the organizers have compiled and published the lecture transcripts, spreading and popularizing the humanities on a wider scale. This book collects 18 lectures delivered by guests of the "Guangzhou Lecture Forum" before December 2004. We present these diverse and vibrant lectures to a broader audience, sharing our spiritual wealth with everyone. Ren Jiyou, Spring 2005, Beijing
