1. Balanced Nutrition
From the perspective of dietary science, spring emphasizes maintaining a relative balance of protein, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals to prevent overeating and excessive consumption, which could lead to liver dysfunction and abnormal bile secretion. According to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), nurturing Yang in spring primarily involves nurturing the liver. In the Five Elements theory, the liver belongs to wood and corresponds to spring, governing the upward and outward movement. In spring, the liver flourishes and grows, making it particularly important for individuals with hypertension or coronary heart disease to nurture Yang. Spring is the peak season for the reproduction of bacteria and viruses. The liver, responsible for detoxification, bears a heavy burden, and the rising liver qi can also trigger the recurrence of old illnesses. When liver fire rises in spring, it can further weaken the already vulnerable lung yin, making tuberculosis more likely to take hold. TCM holds that spring governs the liver in the human body, and liver qi naturally peaks in spring. Therefore, improper spring health maintenance can easily harm liver qi. To adapt to seasonal climate changes and maintain health, dietary adjustments should prioritize nurturing the liver.
2. Nourishing Yang in Diet
Yang refers to the body's Yang energy. TCM believes that "Yang protects the body from external pathogens," meaning it strengthens the body's defense against the six evils of nature. In spring, dietary choices should follow the principle of "nourishing Yang in spring and summer" as outlined in the Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon. It is advisable to consume more warming foods to enrich the body's Yang energy, enhancing resistance to pathogens, particularly wind. Li Shizhen, in the Compendium of Materia Medica, also advocated for eating a mix of pungent and tender vegetables like scallions, garlic, chives, polygonum, Artemisia, and mustard. Since kidney Yang is the root of the body's Yang energy, nurturing Yang in diet also involves warming kidney Yang. In spring, Yang energy is abundant on the surface of the body, while internally, it appears insufficient. Therefore, dietary choices should include foods that nourish kidney Yang. Currently, aside from polygonum and Artemisia, which are less commonly eaten, scallions, garlic, and chives are excellent choices for nurturing Yang.
3. More Sweetness, Less Acidity
The renowned TCM physician Sun Simiao once said, "In spring, it is advisable to reduce sourness and increase sweetness to nourish the spleen." This means that during spring, people should eat less sour foods and more sweet ones, as this helps replenish the spleen's qi. TCM considers the spleen to be the foundation of postnatal health and the source of the body's qi and blood. A strong spleen qi contributes to longevity. However, since spring is dominated by liver qi, according to the Five Elements theory, the liver (wood) and spleen (earth) are in a mutually restraining relationship. A strong liver can harm the spleen, affecting its digestive and absorption functions. TCM also classifies flavors with organs: sourness enters the liver, sweetness enters the spleen, and saltiness enters the kidneys. Therefore, excessive sour food consumption can strengthen liver function, exacerbating an already overly active liver qi and harming spleen qi. Consequently, in spring, people should eat less sour foods to prevent excessive liver qi and more sweet foods, such as jujubes, Chinese yam, and fried rice crusts, which nourish the spleen.
4. Light and Warm Diet
Transitioning from the rich and heavy diet of winter to a lighter, warm, and balanced one is recommended. In terms of animal-based foods, reduce the intake of high-fat items like fatty meats, as greasy foods can easily cause a sense of fullness and fatigue. Opt for warm and gentle meals.
