Remembrance of Raymond Aron: Fifty Years of Political Reflection

Author: (French) Aaron

Publishing Date: 2006-09-01
Features: The Memoirs serve a dual purpose. On one hand, Aaron recounts the major historical events that took place in France in the 20th century, meticulously depicting the appearances of various figures. He incorporates both his personal life and the surrounding environment of public life, though only slightly touching on the fluctuations of his emotions and the ups and downs of events. On the other hand, he collects and organizes all his writings into the book. The core content of each work is summarized in a few pages of introductions, and Aaron also supplements it with various reactions to his reviews, including letters of support and opposition, as well as his own reflective comments. To some extent, Memoirs summarizes his entire life and all his writings. Aaron, who wrote 20 years of editorials for Le Figaro, records the process of his lifelong struggle with the French left-wing intellectuals in this book with clear and insightful prose. In particular, the long-term debate between him and his fellow left-wing thinker, Sartre, is considered a distinctive case in modern thought. Aaron has always taken it upon himself to be a calm and fervent figure in the cultural world of the left, though he occasionally felt "on the fringes," he remained unwavering in his stance until the end. From him, we can see some resilient and distinctive qualities of liberals: he was reluctant to propose grand and consistent systems, dared not speak with certainty about a perfect society, and was cautious about promises of group salvation. As Sartre once remarked, he "belonged to those who always maintained a historical distance from the fiery historical movements," and he set the task of his life as "understanding my era as honestly as possible, always remembering the limitations of my knowledge." It is precisely this intellectual character of Aaron that enables his writings to "shine the eyes of a generation of intellectuals."
