What is neonatal pulmonary hyaline membrane disease?

Patient's question:

Crying until there is no breathing, will a newborn with neonatal pulmonary hyaline membrane disease cry non-stop after birth? What are the symptoms? What should be done?

Doctor's answer:

Hello, no. If the child survives for more than 72 hours and does not develop severe complications, the child often produces sufficient surfactant, allowing the condition to gradually improve. Currently, surfactant replacement therapy can be used in clinical practice: generally, a surfactant preparation of 100-200 mg/(kg·dose) is suspended in 4 ml of normal saline and administered as early as possible through a tracheal catheter into four different positions (supine, right side, left side, and then supine again). A mask bag-valve device is used to provide positive pressure ventilation for 1-2 minutes for each position, ensuring uniform distribution of the surfactant in both lungs to prevent complications.
